Black-Seeded Simpson Lettuce

(45 days) Introduced by Peter Henderson & Co. in the 1870's, this variety quickly became almost legendary. This loose-leaf heirloom has large, green crinkled leaves and produces consistently through all kinds of growing conditions. Very flavourful. Slow-bolting; drought, heat and frost tolerant. (47 days) A very old variety (pre-1885), and originally from Yugoslavia, this lettuce is beautiful - with long, twisted, savoyed leaves tinged purple-red. . Extremely cold-hardy.

NEW FOR 2010!! 55 days. All I can say is that someone was consorting with the wrong type of people, if this was the first name that popped into his (and, yes, I'm sure it was a "his") head on spying this lettuce. But it fits, in an odd way. The leaves of this Italian heirloom are beautiful-large, green with a pink-red edge, and so frilly that they are said to resemble a blowsy, frowsy head of hair. This delicious lettuce can be cut as a single head or used as a cut-and-come-again.

Forellenschluss Lettuce

(55 days) This Austrian heirloom's name means "speckled like a trout's back", referring to its exquisitely beautiful patterning of maroon over lime green. Each plant has its own unique colouration. Very frost hardy and has won taste tests. (Approx. 24,000 seeds/oz)

(1860's) (60 days) . Named for a Civil War veteran, George Admire. His 90-year old granddaughter gave his lettuce seed to Seed Savers Exchange in 1977. Large, bronze-tinged leaves stay tender, even in extreme hot weather. Slow to bolt.

Green Deer Tongue Lettuce

SORRY, SOLD OUT FOR 2010. (50-60 days) The green form of Deer Tongue lettuce, it forms loose heads of thick leaves that have a buttery texture. Like other butterheads, the entire heads can be picked when young for baby head production.

Merveille des Quatre Saisons Lettuce

(60 days) A classic old French lettuce, described by the famous French seed company, Vilmorin, in 1885. This heirloom has a rosette of reddish-coloured leaves that deepen to a dark red in cool weather. (approx. 24,000 seeds per oz.)

Mesclun Mix

We have enhanced our high quality mesclun mix to now include: Arugula, Russian Red Kale, Red Giant mustard green, Mizuna mustard green, Black-Seeded Simpson lettuce, Oak Leaf lettuce, Persian Cress and Collards. Substitutions may be made based on seed availability.

Oak Leaf Lettuce

(40 - 55 days) An ancient French heirloom lettuce that was introduced by Vilmorin in 1771 and brought to England in 1827. Heat-and-cold tolerant, this lettuce is sweet and tender and can be harvested throughout the summer.The beautiful, oak-leaf shaped leaves are sharply-serrated and medium-green in colour.

Paris Island Cos Lettuce

(68 days) This is a classic romaine used in Caesar salads. An 1886 gardening book indicated that "millions of this variety are annually grown to supply the markets of London alone, where it is preferred to all others." Forming tall, slightly-ruffled heads of dark green leaves with a white heart, this lettuce has a crisp, sweet flavour and is slow to bolt. (approx. 24,000 seeds/oz)

Red Coral Lettuce

(55 days) A beautiful heirloom lettuce with reddish-pink, frilled leaves Quite stunning visually, with a nice, sweet flavour.

Red Deer Tongue Lettuce

(60 - 65 days) Named for its triangular leaves, which are blushed with red, this heirloom was popular with pioneers for its hardiness - it's both cold-hardy and slow-to-bolt! (approx. 24,000 seeds/oz)

Red Oak Leaf Lettuce

(55 - 60 days) Beautiful, deep burgundy oak-leaf shaped leaves when mature. Grow in full sun for best colour. One of the best cold-weather varieties.

Reine des Glaces Lettuce

(60 - 65 days) A French heirloom, this variety is a small-headed, black-seeded gourmet lettuce, so-named because its spikes on the outer leaves resemble a crown. Cold-hardy lettuce whose leaves can be harvested after the heads. (approx. 24,000 seeds/oz)
