(85 days) Indeterminate, Potato-leaved. I decided to grow this heirloom for no other reason than, that it had the same name as my niece. However, I'm so glad I did! This heavily-foliaged plant produces large, beefsteak-type, pinkish-red fruits with a dense flesh and a sweet, rich flavour. Little information is available on this tomato, other than it is one of Carolyn Male's favourites, but I highly reccomend it for the home garden.
(75 days) Indeterminate. Another wonder tomato from Russia! The fruit is a rich brown/copper-green colour, and is large for a cherry tomato (11/2”– 2”). It’s packed with great taste and is very prolific, continuing to produce well into the fall.
(70-80 days) Determinate. 1915. Developed by renowned tomato breeder Luther Burbank, these stocky bushes produce 4-6 oz. red fruits that are slightly tart and great for slicing.
(70 days) Indeterminate. This has got to be one of the more unique-looking heirloom tomatoes I've come across! The prolific plant produces tons of tiny (1-2"), flattened, orange/red fruits that are deeply ribbed or "ruffled". The taste has been described as "sweet yet with a bit of a zing". These tomatoes would make beautiful additions to salads or as garnishes.
(80-90 days) Indeterminate. This tomato comes with a pedigree – it was developed by the late Alan Chadwick of England. Chadwick was famous in gardening circles for introducing (actually he was re-introducing) the concepts and practices of French Intensive gardening and bio-dynamic systems. These tomatoes are both juicy and prolific. The sweet flavour of the tiny (1.5”) round fruits is considered by some to be the best flavour of medium-sized cherry tomatoes. Great for just popping in the mouth or for salads.
(75-90 days) Indeterminate.Pre-1890 Originally grown by the Cherokee, this plant produces large (12 oz), dusty –rose coloured fruit that has a rich, sweet taste. A prolific producer, it is also relatively disease-free.
(70-75 days) Indeterminate. This is a very old Ukrainian variety that was re-named in honour of the Russian cosmonaut who died coming back from a mission in 1971. The interesting medium-large sized red fruits are diverse in shape and size - some are flat, others round, others square-shaped. They all share, however, an excellent taste that has people raving and that regularly wins taste tests. This is a highly-productive variety that withstands cool temperatures very well. Endangered.
(65 days) An early producer of large, red fruit with an excellent flavour. Prolific. One of Dan's favourites. Note: Dan is a real utilitarian kind of guy, so his favourite tomatoes tend to be those that grow well in most conditions, are maintenance-free and produce large yields of tasty tomatoes.
Indeterminate. (80 days). There was an actual Dr. Wyche, who owned Cole Brothers’ Circus and fertilized his gardens with elephant manure. He apparently had the most luscious gardens that anyone had ever seen. He developed this particular cultivar and donated seeds to the Seed Savers’ Exchange. Fruits are beefsteak-shape, yellow turning to gold at maturity, large (up to one lb), and possess a rich, complex taste. They also tend to be blemish-free.
NEW FOR 2010!! 85 days. Indeterminate. We grew this tomato in our early years here and loved it for its large crop of perfect, juicy, round red tomatoes. We're pleased to be able to offer it again. Developed by George Sparks, of New Jersey, the plants are shorter than most indeterminates and the tomatoes are richly flavoured.
(65-80 days) Indeterminate. This hard-to-find heirloom is well worth growing. Originating from the Black Forest area of Germany, it produces heavy yields of delicious, medium-sized, perfectly spherical pink-purple fruits. It has demonstrated outstanding tolerance of foliage diseases and variable weather conditions, yielding high numbers of fruit for us this summer, despite the drought. Carolyn Male considers it “outstanding”.
(70-75 days) Ind. This large, green, beefsteak-type tomato grows up to a pound in size and has a flavour that’s a nice balance between sweet and tangy. When mature, the skin turns to green with pale yellow highlights, but the meaty flesh stays green. The plant is quite tolerant of hot, humid weather and produces good yields.
Indeterminate (85 days) A beautiful paste tomato that is also great for salsa. This heirloom produces heavy yields of long, red fruits with a rich, full taste and very few seeds.
