The Story of our Seedhouse
Celebrating over 20 years
The Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse is an family owned and operated heirloom seedhouse and plant nursery in southern Ontario, Canada. We have been providing rare and endangered heirloom varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers to gardeners and market growers since 1996. We specialize in open-pollinated, non-GMO, organic heirloom seeds. We are committed to preserving genetic biodiversity, and our goal is to save from extinction as many rare plant varieties as we can, in an aim to serve our lofty goal of saving the world one seed at a time.
The Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse has been a passion project from the start. Thirty years ago, we moved from the city to a 10 acre field in rural Ontario with our two small children. First, we planted trees; then we built a house. We've never quite finished the house; it seems to have always taken a back seat to more important activities like homeschooling, garden digging, seed sowing& plant propagation, fort building, tadpole searching and spaghetti squash boat-building.
Now, we have a safe haven for rare & endangered plants and for the myriad forms of wildlife that share this spot with us. We even have an Elfin Glade for the little folk.
In 2015 we bought the farm next door as well, expanding our space to 20 acres and adding a much-needed barn and clear fields for growing larger-sized seed crops (not to mention a magic tree and an otter pond!)
