Canadian Heirloom Tomato Collection
This collection showcases our Canadian tomato heritage! Back in the days before modern hybrids, there was a lot of work done by both the Canadian government and many individuals on developing open-pollinated tomato cultivars that would perform well in the particular growing environments of our country. Most of these, proven performers, have fallen by the wayside and many are now hardly available commercially.
In this Collection are four individual packets of seed with 30 seeds each of some of our favourites
- Morden Yellow - 65 days. Determinate. Developed at the Morden Experimental Station in Manitoba in 1950, specifically for short seasons. Bright yellow, medium-sized tomatoes are produced in abundance.
- Scotia - 60 days. Determinate. A favourite from the East Coast, this variety is prized for setting fruit in cold weather. Medium-sized, red fruit.
- Rideau - 70 days. Determinate. From the Experimental Farm in Ottawa, in 1962, from varieties Meteor and Urbana. We obtained our original seed from the Canadian gene bank. Round, red tomatoes of variable sizes with a mild, sweet taste.
- Bellstar - Aka 'Bellestar'. 65 days. Determinate. Developed by Dr. Jack Metcalfe at the Smithfield Experimental Station in Trenton, Ontario, this plum tomato is an absolute wonder! Small plants produce lots of large fruit very early in the season. They can be picked easily and make a superb sauce.
All our seeds are non-GMO and open-pollinated. Our seeds are untreated and non-hybrid. All our seed collections are lovingly created by hand by us! We're a family-owned and operated Seedhouse located in Southern Ontario with over 20 years experience in growing and seed saving.
